Costs holding up abortion pill

THE high cost of applying for the right to import the abortion pill RU486 is holding up the drug's availability in Australia, Democrats leader Lyn Allison has said. Senator Allison today said pharmaceutical companies wishing to distribute RU486 in Australia were dissuaded by the need to pay hefty fees to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). "We're still waiting for two overseas companies to make an application to the TGA to bring the drug to Australia," she told Network Ten. "The main problem is that this drug is now off patent, and the very large sum of money required to have the application made to the TGA is off-putting for pharmaceutical companies." Some individuals had applied successfully to import the drug but it was a difficult process, she said.
