Doctor denies giving abortion drug

Fairfield doctor Suman Sood had not given a woman an abortion drug, her lawyer, Philip Boulten, SC, told a jury in the doctor's trial today. Sood is facing a charge of manslaughter in the NSW Supreme Court over the death of a premature baby, and two charges of illegally administering the abortion drugs. Mr Boulten told the jury the abortion was not illegal, because the 20-year-old woman had considered her options and was clearly distressed about the prospect of an abortion. He said the accounts of what happened in Sood's practice will diverge. Sood never intended to perform the late-term abortion, but had advised the woman she could refer her to Queensland to have it carried out there, Mr Boulten said in his opening address this morning.
