Hatzistergos welcomes ban for abortion doctor

The New South Wales Health Minister John Hatzistergos has welcomed the Medical Tribunal's decision to give a 10-year ban to a Sydney doctor found guilty of performing an illegal abortion. This afternoon the Medical Tribunal formally deregistered Dr Suman Sood and ordered that she be banned from applying to re-register for 10 years. Dr Sood is currently awaiting sentencing for unlawfully procuring an abortion for a patient who was five months pregnant. Mr Hatzistergos says the tribunal had found Dr Sood to be incompetent and dishonest and the public needed to be protected from individuals like her. "This has followed a very lengthy process in which Dr Sood and her legal advisers have used all sorts of legal mechanisms to avoid this matter being able to come to a conclusion," he said.
