Voters to decide on abortion consent

On Nov. 7, California will again vote on a long-standing debate that could affect minors statewide. If passed, Proposition 85 will prevent minors from obtaining an abortion until 48 hours after a physician has notified their parents. Parental notification has been an issue to voters since a law enacted in 1953 allowed minors to have abortions without informing their parents. According to the California Voting Guide, there have been several attempts to change the law, none of which has been successful. And, although 2005's unsuccessful Prop. 73 also asked voters to require parental notification, the issue has again been revisited. Endorsers of Prop. 85 include Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the California Republican Party and the Traditional Values Coalition.
